Speeding
trucks with loud horns and powerful engine drones are common on
highways. But a residential locality- J.P. Nagar 15th cross- has been
putting up with noise for years.
The J.P. Nagar
residents welfare association said 15th cross is being used as link road
through the city between Hosur Road and Pune highway NH4. "It cannot be
a ring road as it has no service road alongside it," they maintain. "By
avoiding the outer ring road, truckers save a distant of around 12 km.
But this at the cost of inconveniencing several residents along the
road," says association president and former high court judge, Justice
H.G. Balakrishnan.
Unable to bear with
the noise, some residents have even left, the former judge maintained.
Despite several requests to the police no action has been taken so far.
And tough boards including 'no sound horn' signals have been put. There
is no enforcement by the police, he added. Police commissioner S.
Mariswamy promised that traffic would be diverted to ring road from the
highways in phases.
